Keith Curle reassures “very good” Mitchell amid competition for starting goalkeeper spot

Northampton Town manager Keith Curle reassures goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell that his starting spot isn’t lost.

Steve Arnold speaks after a solid performance on Tuesday night (Gareth Willsher)Cobblers manager Keith Curle has an embarrassment of riches at the goalkeeper position, with both Arnold and Mitchell vying for the starting position.

Mitchell has been between the sticks since October 17th and has made some smart stops, keeping Arnold out of the side during this time.

However, after conceding a weakly struck free-kick that cost the Cobblers a win away at Rochdale last Tuesday, Arnold has been brought into the side.

Curle on the battle for number one

Curle spoke after the Fleetwood match about the healthy competition between the pair.

“Mitch is a very very good goalkeeper, but within it, he’s got competition from Steve Arnold as well. And again, it’s excellent for the football club to have two competing goalkeepers.”

“Their attitude and their mentality to their work as goalkeepers is excellent. They’re very supportive of each other and I think that’s vitally important.”

“When one’s not playing, the other one pushes him because he wants to play and that’s what we try to do in our recruitment. We didn’t want an experienced goalkeeper and a young lad.”

“We wanted two goalkeepers that were competing for the number one jersey.”

Northampton take on high-flying Doncaster Rovers on Saturday and it remains to be seen if Arnold will keep his place in the starting eleven.

The Cobblers currently sit 16th in League One, five points clear of the relegation places.
